LED or light emitting diode is becoming a popular light source mainly because of its many benefits over other conventional light sources. These benefits include higher energy efficiency, longer product life, improved safety and smaller size. LED uses significantly lower amount of energy compared to other light sources. For example, compared to incandescent bulbs, LED uses 40-80% lower energy to produce the same amount of light. Higher energy efficiency means lower electricity costs – this is why LED has become a popular light source not only in many industrial establishments but in houses as well.
LEDs also have long product life rated at 50,000 hours or even longer compared to incandescent bulbs having only around 3,000 hours. Longer product life means lower replacement and maintenance costs. LEDs also produce less amount of heat making it safer than other light sources. It also requires shorter amount of time to heat and produce light when illuminated.
Other benefits of LED include the following: it does not contain hazardous wastes such as lead, mercury, and sodium; and it is very easy to install. LED is a very wise lighting option not only because of lower monetary costs required throughout its life but the benefits that it gives to the environment.
